Much of my emotion is expressed through art. My painting features bold brush strokes and dramatic color shifts, echoing life's joy and despair. I enjoy the push-pull between representational and abstract elements. The subject matter is peripheral. I am more interested in how something is painted than what is being depicted.

As a jazz saxophonist, I use chord structure as a foundation for variations in melody, cadence, and tonality in my solos. My painting is a kind of jam session on canvas. With an object or scene as a springboard, I make chromatic and textural judgements that transform it into something new. A spontaneous visual choice can open a new realm of possibilities, just as ensemble musicians play off each other’s ideas.

I consider the eye to be the first and last court of appeal. My art succeeds when its color schemes, composition and movement attract and engage the audience. I deem it an even greater accomplishment when the unresolved tension between representation and abstraction in my painting sparks a viewer’s desire to revisit it.
